If you have a base of mobile numbers for your customers, colleagues or suppliers, then sending a text can be a low cost, simple way of creating awareness or generating response.

If you are a T-Mobile customer then it’s even easier!  With T-Mobile’s Business 1-Plan, texts are unlimited on 24 and 36 month plans so you can send all of your messages to all of your contacts on a regular basis.

If you are sending low numbers of texts, you can do it from your own mobile phone, but for larger quantities, there is text message software you can load onto your computer and there are also text message broadcast companies that you can use.

If you are considering sending more business text messages, it’s worth looking at your tariff package to ensure you are on the best plan.  Give your Jelly administrator a call on 0808 161 0000 and outline your plans and they will make sure your mobile package is right for what you want to do.

Like any form of marketing, if you are going to use mobile text messaging (SMS), there are a few tips to ensure you achieve the best results and build a positive reputation.

Target your Message

To get the best response, identify what messages you are going to send to which audience. Remember, if you are sending a marketing or sales message to your customers, make sure you copy your staff and let them know where the response will be directed.

Timing

Most people have their mobiles with them over 90% of the day, so timing is not much of an issue. However, if you are sending business text messages, the best time is usually mid to late afternoon.

Dnt Use Txt Speak!

If you are sending a business marketing message make sure you use standard English and ensure there are no errors or typos. Txt spk may work with a casual message to friends but might spoil your good work with an important business customer.

KISS - Keep it Simple Stupid!

You only have 160 characters to get your message across, so keep it to one simple message with a clear call to action and response method.  We know you’re not stupid!

Make it very clear

Ensure you include everything in your message in a clear way and send a test to a colleague first to make sure it does the job you need it to do. If they have to call or go to a web site, ensure you give the correct phone number or web site address.

Make an impact

Just like any other marketing message, grab their attention immediately. Start your message with FREE, NEWS or OFFER if it’s applicable. This will also show up on the text preview on their mobile phone and will encourage them to open the SMS text message.

Test it then revise it and test it again

First impressions count so much, so you need to be sure your message is correct.  Always send a test message first so you can see how it appears on the small screen of a mobile phone. Each time you make a change you must test it again to be sure it says what you want it to say.
